What Makes A Next-Gen Game?

We recently attended the IGDA San Diego event “What Makes a Next-Gen Game?” It featured a panel of leading members of the gaming media which included Brandon Sheffield, editor from Game Developer Magazine, Geoff Keighley, Game Head host from Spike TV, Kaiser Kwang, deputy editor-in-chief from PSM, Francesca Reyes, editor-in-chief from Official Xbox Magazine, Dave Halverson, editor-in-chief from Play Magazine, and Paul Semel, contributing writer for GamePro, Official PlayStation, EGM, and several other publications. They shared their ideas of what they thought makes a “next-gen” game. They touched on several topics including graphics, realism, gameplay, if a game is groundbreaking, if a story is good, the kind of experience that a game may give you, and so on. They also touch on the topic of innovative control schemes which lead to talk of the Wii and DS and how they offer new ways of experiencing things. Games discussed included God of War II, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Wii Sports, Madden, even the classic pong.

Check out the audio of the event from the links below. The first part featured pre-set questions while the second part opened the floor to Q&A.

(Our apologies near the end of the audios. Our batteries began to die. :C)
